A New Beginning Starts on a Caribbean Island

For many people struggling with alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, or other substances, the hardest part of recovery isn't admitting the problem — it's finding a program that is safe, clinically sound, and financially within reach. In the United States, a single week of medically supervised detox can cost $10,000 to $20,000, and that's often before therapy even begins. Most families simply cannot absorb that expense, and insurance gaps leave thousands of people each year without a viable path forward.

Sanctuary Clinics is changing that. Our new 7-day medical detox program in Cozumel, Mexico offers a complete, physician-supervised, all-inclusive experience starting at $2,500 for a shared room or $4,000 for a private room — a fraction of what comparable programs cost in the U.S. or even elsewhere in Mexico. Set on the turquoise coastline of Quintana Roo, the program treats the full spectrum of substance dependence — alcohol, heroin, oxycodone, fentanyl, hydrocodone, morphine, methadone, Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan, Valium, Adderall, cocaine, methamphetamine, and other prescription and illicit drugs — and combines clinical excellence with the restorative power of the Caribbean and the deep care of a faith-integrated treatment team.

If you or a loved one is searching for an affordable opioid detox in Mexico, a benzodiazepine detox program, a heroin or fentanyl detox retreat, or a weeklong alcohol detox in the Caribbean that treats the whole person — body, mind, and spirit — this is the program you've been looking for.

This Is Not a Frilly Wellness Retreat — It's Serious Medical Detox

Before going any further, it's important to set expectations clearly. The Cozumel program is not a luxury rehab, a wellness retreat, or a vacation with vitamin IVs. There are no spa packages, no infinity-pool photo shoots, no "executive amenities" padding the price tag. We are not selling a destination experience.

We are running a serious, physician-supervised medical detox for people in genuine danger from alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, and other substances. The setting is comfortable, safe, and medically sound — calm, clean, and dignified, because that's what real detox requires — but every dollar in the program is engineered toward one purpose: getting clients safely off substances and into the next stage of long-term recovery. The Caribbean is the backdrop. The medicine is the point.

The residence sits in a beautiful, walkable part of Cozumel that is about 3 minutes from the downtown city square (the Plaza Central / Benito Juárez), 5 minutes from the seafront Malecon boardwalk, and roughly 8 minutes from one of the most beautiful beaches in the world — close enough to support gentle outdoor recovery activities once clients have stabilized, but quiet and contained enough to keep the medical work front and center. It is not a luxury resort. It is a clinical home in a healing place.

This distinction matters because the rehab industry has trained families to associate "affordable" with "low quality" and "high price" with "high care." Neither is true. Many U.S. programs that charge $20,000 to $40,000 a week are not delivering better medicine — they are delivering bigger marketing budgets, gold-plated lobbies, and insurance billing overhead. Sanctuary's Cozumel program strips all of that out. What you get is exactly what your loved one needs: safe withdrawal, real clinicians, real protocols, a humane environment, and a clear bridge into long-term discipleship recovery.

A Mission-Driven Program Made Possible by a Generous Benefactor

This program exists because of the vision and generosity of a private benefactor who saw a problem the recovery world has known about for years but rarely solved: thousands of men and women are ready to enter long-term Christian discipleship and recovery programs — Adult & Teen Challenge, Pure Life Ministries, The Refuge, Rescue Atlanta, and dozens of other 9-to-12-month residential ministries — but they cannot be admitted until they have medically detoxed first.

The problem is that most U.S. detox programs cost $10,000 to $20,000 for a single week, are not Christian in orientation, and often discharge people back into the same environment that fueled their addiction. Families scramble. Beds at long-term programs go unfilled. Lives are lost in the gap between "I'm ready" and "I'm clean enough to be admitted."

Our benefactor underwrote the launch of this program specifically to close that gap. By locating in Cozumel, Mexico, Sanctuary Clinics is able to deliver fully physician-supervised medical detox at roughly one-tenth the U.S. cost — not because clinical standards are lower, but because the underlying healthcare economics are different. Mexican physicians, nurses, medications, facilities, and ancillary services cost a fraction of what they cost in the United States, with no compromise on safety or quality.

That cost difference, combined with our benefactor's subsidy and our self-pay (non-insurance) model, is what makes the $2,500 shared-room and $4,000 private-room all-inclusive weeklong detox possible. It is a Christian detox bridge — built specifically to get people safely off substances and into the long-term discipleship program that can change their lives. We work directly with Adult & Teen Challenge and other long-term Christian recovery ministries to coordinate admissions and ensure a seamless handoff from detox to discipleship.

Turquoise Caribbean waters off the coast of Cozumel

Why Cozumel? The Setting Matters

Recovery research consistently shows that environment shapes outcomes. When the body is fighting through withdrawal and the mind is processing years of pain, the surroundings either work for you or against you. Cozumel works for you.

Cozumel is a Caribbean island off Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, easily reached by direct, nonstop flights from dozens of U.S. and Canadian cities into either Cozumel International Airport (CZM) or Cancún International Airport (CUN), with a short ferry from Playa del Carmen completing the trip. The island offers something rare in addiction treatment: total separation from the dealers, prescriptions, people, and places that fueled the addiction, paired with safety, modern medical infrastructure, and a slower, more contemplative pace of life.

Mornings begin with sunrise over the Caribbean. Sea breezes, palm-shaded courtyards, walks along the Malecon, and the gentle rhythm of island life create the physiological calm that medical detox requires. Clients consistently report sleeping better, eating better, and finding emotional clarity faster in this setting than in clinical environments back home.

For many, leaving the country — even just for a week — provides a psychological reset that's almost impossible to achieve in a hospital ward or suburban treatment center. It signals to the brain, this is something different. This time is different.

Medical Tourism in Mexico Is Not New — It's Mainstream

For families who are nervous about the words "detox in Mexico," it's worth pausing on a fact that the U.S. healthcare industry rarely advertises: medical tourism to Mexico is one of the largest and most established cross-border healthcare flows in the world. Estimates run from hundreds of thousands to well over a million Americans traveling to Mexico every year for medical and dental care — surgeries, dental work, cardiology, orthopedics, fertility care, oncology, weight-loss procedures, cosmetic surgery, and yes, addiction treatment.

They go for the same reason our clients come to Cozumel: excellent medical care at a fraction of U.S. prices. Mexican physicians and surgeons are fully credentialed, often U.S.- or Europe-trained, and Mexican hospitals routinely hold international accreditations. The savings — commonly 50 to 80 percent versus U.S. pricing — come from a different cost structure (lower nursing and facility costs, no insurance billing overhead), not from cutting clinical corners.

Sanctuary Clinics operates inside that established, well-understood medical tourism ecosystem. We are not an outlier or an experiment. We are part of a long, mainstream tradition of Americans and Canadians choosing Mexico for high-quality, affordable, physician-led care — now applied specifically to medical detox and recovery.

Detox Plus Other Care: A Practical Advantage for Our Patients

Many of the patients who come to Sanctuary Cozumel take advantage of the trip to address other medical needs at the same time — needs they have been postponing for years because of U.S. pricing. While they stabilize in detox and through the week of their stay, they can also schedule procedures and consultations with five-star Cozumel medical providers that we know personally and trust. The cost differences are dramatic. To give just one example, a dental implant that commonly runs $7,000 to $8,000 in the United States typically costs $800 to $1,200 in Cozumel — the same titanium hardware, the same surgical technique, U.S.- or Europe-trained dentists, in modern accredited clinics. Similar savings apply across dental work, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, orthopedics, dermatology, ophthalmology and LASIK, cardiology workups, fertility care, weight-loss procedures, and routine imaging and labs.

For a patient who has finally arrived in a calm place, finally has time, and finally has space to think about their body and their health holistically, this is genuinely life-changing. A week in Cozumel can mean coming home not only sober but also with the dental work, the procedure, or the workup they have been putting off — all for less than the U.S. cost of the secondary care alone.

Sanctuary Cozumel maintains a curated list of five-star local medical providers — dentists, surgeons, specialists, imaging centers, and primary care — whom we know personally, have visited, and trust with our own patients. We are in the process of building this out into a formal concierge directory and referral service, so that patients (and their families) can plan a combined detox-and-medical trip with one point of contact. If you have a specific procedure or workup in mind, ask a Care Guide on intake and we will check what's currently available and how to schedule it alongside your detox week.

Cozumel Is Safe, Hospitable, and Built for Visitors

A second concern families raise is safety. The simplest answer: Cozumel is one of the safest, most visitor-ready destinations in all of Mexico.

Around 125,000 cruise passengers come ashore in Cozumel every week — making it one of the busiest cruise ports in the Western Hemisphere. The island's economy, infrastructure, and culture are organized around hospitality. There is a robust, well-staffed network of restaurants, cafes, pharmacies, clinics, hospitals, transportation, and bilingual services because the entire island is built to welcome and care for international visitors.

That hospitality infrastructure benefits our clients directly:

  • A vibrant downtown city square (Plaza Central / Benito Juárez) about 3 minutes away, with cafes, restaurants, churches, and quiet places to walk during recovery.
  • The seafront Malecon boardwalk 5 minutes away — a flat, well-lit waterfront path that's ideal for gentle exercise as clients stabilize.
  • World-class beaches roughly 8 minutes away, available for calm, supervised outdoor time once medically appropriate.
  • Reliable bilingual medical infrastructure — pharmacies, clinics, and hospitals that already serve a steady international population.
  • A culture of hospitality and security, because Cozumel's economy depends on visitors feeling safe and well cared for.

Clients are never wandering through a place that does not know how to host them. They are detoxing in a town that has spent decades perfecting how to welcome, feed, transport, and care for international guests — all of which makes the clinical work easier, calmer, and safer.

Getting Here Is Easier (and Often Cheaper) Than You'd Expect

One of the most overlooked advantages of detoxing in Cozumel is travel itself. A person in active withdrawal cannot tolerate long, multi-leg trips — layovers, gate changes, and missed connections are not just inconvenient, they are clinically risky. Cozumel and Cancún are unusually well-served by direct, nonstop flights from both the U.S. and Canada, which means most clients can be on a single plane from home to the Caribbean in just a few hours.

  • Nonstop flights into Cancún (CUN) are available from dozens of U.S. cities — including New York, Newark, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Charlotte, Atlanta, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Nashville, Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Dallas, Houston, Denver, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle — and from major Canadian cities such as Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver, Ottawa, and Winnipeg. From Cancún, a short ground transfer and ferry brings clients to Cozumel; our team coordinates this end-to-end.
  • Direct flights into Cozumel (CZM) are available from cities such as Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Newark, Minneapolis, Chicago, and Toronto, often dropping clients within minutes of the Sanctuary residence.
  • Fares are often lower than U.S. domestic flights. Because Cancún and Cozumel are some of the most heavily traveled leisure destinations in the Americas, airlines compete aggressively on price. It is not unusual for a nonstop ticket from a mid-sized U.S. city to Cancún to cost less than a connecting domestic flight to a U.S. treatment center in another state.

We build this into admissions planning. Our team helps clients identify the shortest, most direct route from home to Cozumel, books airport pickup, and — for clients in acute withdrawal — coordinates with family or a sober companion to make travel as safe and simple as possible. Less time in airports means less withdrawal risk, less temptation, and a faster path from "I'm ready" to "I'm in care."

Next-Day Admission for U.S. and Canadian Patients — Including Passport Help in 48 Hours

In addiction medicine, the gap between "I'm ready" and "I'm in care" is where lives are lost. Most U.S. and Canadian detox programs make families wait days or weeks for intake assessments, insurance pre-authorization, and bed availability — and in that gap, motivation evaporates, withdrawal escalates, and relapses happen.

Sanctuary Cozumel is built to close that gap. If a U.S. or Canadian patient has a valid passport, we can often get them into care the very next day.

The fast-track admission process:

  • Phone or video consultation with our admissions team (same day, often within hours of your first call)
  • Brief pre-admission medical screening with our clinical team to confirm Cozumel is the right level of care
  • Travel coordination — our team helps identify the shortest direct flight, books airport pickup in Cozumel, and arranges sober-companion support if needed
  • Arrival in Cozumel as early as the next day, with medical intake, first medications, and stabilization beginning the moment the client steps onto the property

No Passport? We Can Help You Get One in 48 Hours

For U.S. and Canadian families who don't have a current passport, Sanctuary Cozumel offers something most treatment programs simply cannot: a concierge passport-acquisition service that can deliver a valid passport in as little as 48 hours.

We work with established expedited-passport services and government-authorized passport agencies in both the United States and Canada to:

  • Walk families through the application paperwork (photos, forms, proof of citizenship, fee structure)
  • Identify the nearest regional U.S. passport agency or Passport Canada office for in-person urgent appointments
  • Coordinate with reputable expedited-passport couriers who can return a U.S. passport in 24 to 72 hours for genuine medical emergencies
  • Provide a clinical letter from our medical team documenting medical urgency, when that letter is needed to qualify for life-or-death emergency passport processing through U.S. or Canadian government channels

The combined effect is dramatic: a family in Ohio, Alberta, Texas, or Ontario who calls Sanctuary on Monday morning with no passport in hand can realistically have their loved one in Cozumel — under physician care, on medications, and stabilizing — by Thursday or Friday of the same week. That speed alone is often the difference between a successful detox and another lost month.

This fast-admission pathway is included at no additional cost; only the actual government passport fees and any courier fees are passed through to the family at cost.

Substances We Treat

Sanctuary Clinics' Cozumel detox program is built to safely manage withdrawal from the full range of substances that drive today's addiction crisis. Our medical protocols are individualized to the substance, dose, duration of use, and the client's overall health.

Alcohol

  • Beer, wine, spirits — including long-term heavy daily use
  • Managed with evidence-based protocols to prevent seizures, delirium tremens (DTs), and other dangerous withdrawal complications

Opioids

  • Heroin
  • Fentanyl and fentanyl analogs
  • Oxycodone (OxyContin, Percocet, Roxicodone)

Every admission begins with a physician-led medical screening to confirm that a 7-day residential detox in Cozumel is clinically appropriate. For severe, complex, or high-risk cases — for example, very high-dose long-term benzodiazepine use, or clients with significant cardiac or seizure histories — we may recommend a longer program, a different level of care, or hospital-based detox. Safety is non-negotiable.

Two Room Options — Same Clinical Program

Every client receives the same physician-led medical care, the same therapeutic programming, the same nutrition, and the same aftercare planning. The only difference is your accommodation:

Option Price (7 nights, all-inclusive) Best for
Shared Room $2,500 Clients comfortable sharing a recovery-focused residence with one other same-gender client. Most affordable option, made possible by our benefactor.
Private Room $4,000 Clients who need additional privacy — executives, professionals, light sleepers, or anyone whose recovery is best supported by a solo space.

Both options include 100% of the clinical, medical, therapeutic, and aftercare services described below. Room availability is confirmed at admission.

Who This Program Is For

The 7-day medical detox is designed for adults who are physically and psychologically ready to step away from alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, stimulants, cannabis, or prescription pharmaceuticals and who need a safe, structured environment to clear their systems and stabilize.

This program is an excellent fit if you are:

  • A working professional or executive who needs discreet, time-limited treatment
  • A patient dependent on prescription opioids or benzodiazepines who wants to safely come off
  • Someone with heroin or fentanyl use who needs a clinical detox without committing to long-term maintenance medications
  • A long-term drinker who needs medical supervision to withdraw safely
  • A spouse, parent, or family member ready to break the cycle but afraid of the cost
  • A person of faith looking for a program that respects and integrates spiritual recovery
  • A client returning to recovery after a relapse who needs a focused reset
  • A candidate awaiting admission to Adult & Teen Challenge, Pure Life Ministries, The Refuge, Rescue Atlanta, or another long-term Christian discipleship program who needs to complete medical detox first

This program is not intended for acute psychiatric emergencies, pregnancy-related detox, or medically unstable clients who require hospital-level intensive care. In cases of very severe opioid or benzodiazepine dependence, a longer program may be recommended. Our clinical team conducts a thorough pre-admission screening to ensure Cozumel is the right setting for your needs. If it's not, we'll help you find a program that is.

The Sanctuary Clinical Philosophy

Sanctuary Clinics was founded by Dr. David Hoskins, PsyD, a pioneer in Christian behavioral health with decades of experience building treatment programs across the United States. Dr. Hoskins is the founder behind Honey Lake Clinic in Greenville, Florida (2016–2021), the founder of Sanctuary Clinics Florida in Monticello, and now the founder of Sanctuary Cozumel — the same clinician-leader, the same Christ-centered model, applied to a new generation of patients and a new international footprint. Our Cozumel medical detox program operates under the clinical leadership of Dr. Thomas Rayner, MD, Chief Medical Officer, who oversees all medical protocols, physician staffing, medication management, and patient safety standards across the program.

A Pioneer's Track Record — and Vision 2035

The Cozumel program is not a one-off experiment. It is part of Vision 2035 — Dr. Hoskins' long-range commitment to plant Christ-centered behavioral health clinics and recovery communities in 12 strategic countries around the world by 2035. Cozumel is the first international site in that vision: a Christian medical detox built where the clinical economics, the cultural hospitality, and the missional opportunity converge.

For patients and families, that lineage matters. You are not handing your loved one to a new operator. You are entrusting them to the same founder, the same clinical philosophy, and the same Christ-centered standard of care that has shaped Christian behavioral health treatment in the U.S. for nearly a decade — now extended internationally as the first step of a 12-country mission.

The Sanctuary model integrates three pillars that most detox programs treat separately:

1. Clinical excellence. Evidence-based detox protocols, licensed medical and psychiatric staff, and individualized care plans — the same standard of clinical care you would expect at a top U.S. facility.

2. Whole-person healing. Detox is not just a chemical process. It's emotional, relational, and spiritual. Our team includes therapists, spiritual directors, and recovery coaches who address the full picture.

3. Faith-integrated optional care. For clients who want it, we offer Christian spiritual direction, biblical counseling, and integration of faith practices into the recovery process. For clients who don't, programming is entirely clinical and secular — your preferences guide your care.

This integration is what sets Sanctuary apart from typical Mexico rehab centers and generic detox retreats in the Caribbean. You're not just drying out for a week. You're laying the foundation for the rest of your life.

How These Prices Are Possible — Without Cutting Corners

Clients often ask how we can offer a complete weeklong medical detox starting at $2,500 — a price that's 70 to 90 percent below the U.S. average. The answer is straightforward and worth understanding:

  • A generous benefactor. A private donor underwrites the launch and ongoing operating costs of this program because he believes Christian men and women should not have to wait, or go without care, simply because medical detox in the United States is unaffordable.
  • Mexico's healthcare economics. Licensed physicians, nurses, prescription medications, and clinical-grade facilities cost dramatically less in Mexico than in the United States, without any reduction in quality. The nursing labor that drives a large portion of U.S. detox cost is a fraction of the price in Mexico.
  • No insurance billing overhead. U.S. treatment centers spend enormous resources on insurance billing, appeals, and compliance. Our self-pay model eliminates that cost.
  • Right-sized program. We don't pad the program with amenities you don't need. The dollars go to clinical care, medications, nutrition, and a healing environment — not to gold-plated lobbies or marketing budgets.
  • Mission-driven pricing. Sanctuary exists to bridge people into long-term Christian discipleship and recovery programs. Affordability is part of the mission, not an afterthought.

You'll find detox programs in Cozumel priced at $7,500 to $14,500 and U.S. programs that climb past $20,000 for the same week. Our pricing — $2,500 shared or $4,000 private — reflects what detox should cost, not what the market has learned to charge.

What a Week Looks Like

Every client's experience is individualized — opioid detox feels different from alcohol detox, and a Xanax taper unfolds on a different timeline than a heroin clearance — but here's a representative rhythm of the program:

Day 1 — Arrival & Stabilization. Airport pickup, medical and psychiatric intake, room orientation, first medications administered, first meal, and a gentle introduction to the team. The focus is comfort and safety as your body begins detox.

Days 2-3 — Acute Withdrawal Management. This is typically the most physically intense window. Opioid withdrawal peaks around 36-72 hours; alcohol withdrawal carries seizure and DT risk in this window; benzodiazepine taper symptoms emerge gradually. You'll have 24/7 medical monitoring, IV hydration when needed, comfort medications, and frequent clinical check-ins. Therapeutic work begins gently — usually one-on-one and lower-intensity.

Days 4-5 — Stabilization & Therapeutic Work. As the body clears, the mind opens. Daily individual therapy, group sessions, psychoeducation, and optional spiritual direction begin in earnest. Clients often describe these days as the first time their head has felt clear in years.

Day 6 — Integration & Planning. Therapists work with you to build a personalized aftercare plan: what continuing care looks like, what triggers to anticipate, what support to put in place at home, and how to maintain momentum. For opioid and benzodiazepine clients, this includes any continuing taper plan or post-detox medication strategy.

Day 7 — Discharge. A final clinical review, discharge documentation, transportation to the airport, and a clear roadmap for the next 30, 60, and 90 days.

Aftercare: Recovery Doesn't End on Day 7

A week of detox is a beginning, not an ending. This is especially true for opioid and benzodiazepine recovery, where post-acute withdrawal symptoms (PAWS) can persist for weeks or months and relapse risk is highest in the first 90 days.

For that reason, Sanctuary Clinics is intentionally designed as a detox-to-discipleship bridge. Our preferred next step for most clients is admission into a long-term Christian residential recovery program such as Adult & Teen Challenge, Pure Life Ministries, The Refuge, Rescue Atlanta, or another 9-to-12-month discipleship community. We coordinate directly with these programs to confirm bed availability, share appropriate medical records, and ensure clients move from our care to theirs without falling through the cracks.

A supportive group working together — representing ongoing community and aftercare

The Four Pillars Aftercare Program — Free for Life

For clients who cannot or do not need to return to a long-term residential program, Sanctuary Clinics offers something unprecedented in the industry: The Four Pillars — a complete, structured aftercare program that is free for life to every alumnus of our Cozumel detox. It is the perfect support structure for the client who has safely detoxed but still needs ongoing care to stay well.

Every alumnus receives all four pillars at no additional cost, for as long as they want them:

Pillar 1 — Local Church Community. We personally connect each alumnus with a local church family in their hometown, anywhere in the world. Whether it's a six-person home church or a 6,000-person megachurch, no one walks out of Sanctuary without a local body of believers who knows them by name. Recovery is sustained in community, not in isolation.

Pillar 2 — Local Medical & Psychiatric Provider. We help every alumnus identify and connect with a qualified local medical and psychiatric provider for continued medication management, lab work, and ongoing physical health. This is especially important for clients on post-detox opioid, benzodiazepine, or psychiatric medication protocols who need a steady local prescriber.

Pillar 3 — Local Christian Therapist. Sanctuary maintains a database of over 50,000 Christian therapists across the U.S., Canada, and internationally. We match each alumnus with a vetted Christian therapist in their area for weekly or biweekly ongoing therapy — so the clinical work begun in Cozumel continues seamlessly at home.

Pillar 4 — Sanctuary Virtual (the most important pillar). This is the heart of the program. Every night of the week, any Sanctuary alumnus can join a 90-minute live Zoom group led by a licensed therapist, pastoral counselor, or peer group leader. It is free for life. It is essentially ongoing treatment, on demand, anywhere in the world. For many alumni, Sanctuary Virtual becomes the standing weekly anchor of their recovery for years after detox.

Sanctuary Clinics is not a collection of brick-and-mortar buildings. It is a global community of Christians struggling with mental health and addiction, supporting one another for the long haul. The Four Pillars — church, medical provider, Christian therapist, and Sanctuary Virtual — are how we make that community real and accessible to every person who comes through our Cozumel detox.

For clients who are not entering long-term residential care, the Four Pillars is the answer to the most common and most dangerous question in recovery: "What now?" The answer is: a church family who knows you, a doctor who manages your meds, a Christian therapist who walks with you weekly, and a global community you can log into any night of the week. Free. For life.

Every client leaves Cozumel with:

  • A written aftercare plan tailored to their situation
  • A confirmed admission pathway into a long-term Christian discipleship program where appropriate
  • Full enrollment in the Four Pillars aftercare program — including lifetime access to Sanctuary Virtual at no cost
  • Specific referrals for therapy, IOP, MAT providers, or support groups near home
  • A scheduled 30-day post-detox check-in with a Sanctuary clinician
  • Access to our alumni community and ongoing resources

This continuity is critical. Detox without aftercare has high relapse rates — particularly for opioids, where post-detox tolerance loss dramatically increases overdose risk. Detox combined with the Four Pillars gives clients a genuine, structured chance at lasting recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is medical detox in Mexico safe — even for heroin, fentanyl, or benzodiazepines?
Yes, when delivered by licensed physicians in a properly equipped facility with appropriate protocols. Sanctuary Clinics operates fully within Mexican medical regulations, with licensed physicians and nursing staff on site. Cozumel has modern medical infrastructure and is accessible to emergency hospital care if ever needed. We screen every admission carefully to ensure the level of care matches the client’s clinical needs.
Do you use medication-assisted treatment (MAT)?
Yes, where clinically indicated. Our physicians use evidence-based medications to manage opioid withdrawal symptoms, prevent alcohol withdrawal seizures, and structure safe benzodiazepine tapers. Medications are included in the $2,500 program cost.
What if I’m on a high dose of Xanax, Klonopin, or another benzo?
Benzodiazepine dependence is one of the most clinically delicate forms of detox and cannot be rushed. Depending on your daily dose and duration of use, our team will either design a 7-day stabilization and taper-initiation plan or recommend a longer program. We never abruptly stop benzos — that approach is dangerous.
Will my U.S. insurance cover this?
Most U.S. insurance plans do not cover treatment outside the country. However, some PPO plans offer partial out-of-network reimbursement. We can provide superbills for clients to submit on their own. The $2,500 price is designed to be affordable as a self-pay program even without insurance.
What languages are spoken?
Our entire clinical team is bilingual in English and Spanish. All programming, therapy, and documentation are available in both languages.
Can family members come?
Family members are welcome to travel to Cozumel and stay nearby. Family sessions can be arranged on-site or via video. We believe family involvement strengthens recovery, and we accommodate it whenever the client requests it.
How quickly can I start?
If you are a U.S. or Canadian citizen with a valid passport, we can often admit you the very next day after a same-day phone or video consultation and pre-admission medical screening. If you don’t currently have a passport, our concierge service can help you obtain one in as little as 48 hours through expedited U.S. and Canadian government channels, putting most clients into care within 3 to 5 days of first contact. For non-urgent intakes, most clients begin within 7 to 14 days.
I don’t have a passport. Can you really help me get one in 48 hours?
Yes, for U.S. and Canadian citizens. We coordinate with established expedited-passport services and government-authorized agencies — including the U.S. Department of State regional passport agencies and Passport Canada urgent-issuance offices — and we can provide a clinical letter from our medical team documenting medical urgency where required. Realistic turnaround for a genuine medical-urgency case is 24 to 72 hours. Government and courier fees are passed through at cost; the concierge service itself is included at no additional charge for incoming patients.
Is this program faith-based?
Yes. Sanctuary Clinics’ Cozumel detox is a Christian-grounded program, made possible by a private benefactor who believes Christian men and women should have access to medically safe, Christ-centered detox. Spiritual direction, biblical counseling, and integration of faith practices are core to the program. At the same time, the underlying medical care is fully evidence-based and welcoming to people who do not share our faith — you choose the level of spiritual integration that fits you.
Do you coordinate with Adult & Teen Challenge or other long-term Christian programs?
Yes. A primary mission of this program is to serve as a medical detox bridge for people who have been accepted to — or are seeking admission to — Adult & Teen Challenge, Pure Life Ministries, The Refuge, Rescue Atlanta, and other long-term residential discipleship programs. We coordinate directly with these ministries on intake, records, and seamless transitions from detox to discipleship.
What’s the difference between the $2,500 and $4,000 options?
The only difference is your accommodation. The $2,500 program places you in a shared room with one other same-gender client; the $4,000 program gives you a private room. All clinical care, therapy, meals, medications, airport transport, and aftercare are identical in both options.
Are scholarships or financial assistance available?
The $2,500 shared-room price is already heavily subsidized by our benefactor. In limited cases of demonstrated financial need — particularly for candidates already accepted to long-term Christian recovery programs — additional financial assistance may be available. Contact our admissions team to discuss your situation.

Take the First Step

If you've been searching for an affordable opioid detox in Mexico, a benzodiazepine detox program in the Caribbean, a heroin or fentanyl detox retreat, a medically supervised alcohol detox in Cozumel, or a Christian detox bridge into Adult & Teen Challenge or a similar long-term discipleship program, Sanctuary Clinics is ready to help.

The weeklong detox — $2,500 shared or $4,000 private — is more than a price point. It's a statement: that recovery should be reachable, that no one ready for discipleship should be turned away because they cannot afford detox first, and that a week on a Caribbean island, with the right team around you, can change the entire trajectory of a life. It's the gift of a generous benefactor, stewarded by a clinical team who believes in both medicine and the mercy of God.

Call Sanctuary Clinics today, or send a confidential inquiry through our website, to schedule a no-cost consultation with our admissions team. We'll answer your questions, walk you through the pre-admission medical screening, and help you decide whether Cozumel is the right next step.
